Postville Review, Fri., 08 Jan. 1915.
At eight o'clock on Sunday morning, January 3, 1915, Geo. Lull, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Postville, passed to his reward aged 85 years, 4 months and 29 days.
George Lull, eldest son of Leonard and Mary Lull, was born in Locke, Cayuga Co., New York, Aug. 5, 1829, and was the last survivor of a family of five children. Leaving home at the age of 18 years he went to Genoa, N.Y., where he learned the machinist trade in the factory of Birdsill & Stevens. Dec. 5, 1852, he was married to Phobe Remington and moved to Auburn, N.Y., where for two years he was employed in a factory and for two years had charge of the hame shop at Auburn prison.
In July 1856 he came westward by rail to Chicago, and from thence made his way on foot to Madison, Wis., Winona and Rochester, Minn., and on the return trip landed in Post township, Allamakee Co., where he bought of the government an 80 acre tract, now a part of the John Hammel farm, and to get the papers recorded he walked to Dubuque. He lived on this place but a year or two, but continued farming until 1875. This was indeed a wild region at that time, wolves, wildcats and deer infesting the timber quite plentifully, and occasionally a bear would be seen. It is also related that at one time he walked from the Hammel farm to McGregor where he carried several thousand feet of lumber from a raft and piled it on the bank of the Mississippi and returned home afoot the same day.
In 1875 he retired from farming and purchased the residence property in Postville that has been his home continuously since.
Mr. Lull started on life's journey with a brave heart and willing hands as his capital stock, and met many of the vicissitudes of the struggling pioneer along the way. He knew what the pinch of poverty meant, but heroically he faced the storms of life and by dint of tireless energy, sound business judgement and frugality he acquired an abundance of this world's goods and for many years he enjoted in a rational way the comforts of a competence.
During his long residence in Postville Mr. Lull has dealt quite extensively in farm and city property, and by good advice and financial assistance he has helped many a struggling poor man of this locality to acquire a farm or home of his own, and among those he has helped may be found his most staunch and warm friends, for he dealt honorably with them.
To Mr. and Mrs. Lull were born three daughters-- Francis died at the age of four years, but the other two, Mrs. G. E. Eaton and Mrs. W. Chriss, both of this city, survive, and with the wife and mother mourn the loss of a loving and devoted husband, a kind and affectionate father.
He is also survived by a grandson, F. W. Eaton, and one great-grandson.
He was mayor of Postville in 1878 and 1879 and also served on the city council.
He was a loyal citizen, good neighbor and true friend and throughout a wide acquaintanceship there will be sorrow sincere that he is no more, and the sympathy of all who knew him will be with the family in their bereavement.
This, in brief, is the life story of one who measured well up to the full stature of a man, whose wearied spirit in the fullness of years has taken its flight to the Eternal City to rest forever in the realm of eternal bliss.
The funeral was held from the home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. R. Mellott officiating. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
