Hazel Riek, age 86, of Lansing, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing with Pastor Laura Gentry officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill, Lansing. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing assisted the family with arrangements. Hazel was born February 11, 1917, on a farm near Waterville to Knute and Hattie (Erickson) Asleson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Waterville Lutheran Church. At baptism, she was given the name Hazel Norma Jeanette Asleson. On September 7, 1941, she married Clemens Riek at Waterville Lutheran Church. After living on a farm near Waterville for four years, they moved to Lansing. They were members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing. While living in Lansing, Hazel first worked as a clerk in charge of the dry goods section of the Aschom Brothers Store. Later, she worked at Peterson's Variety Store and as a cashier at the IGA Store before retirement. During retirement, she enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and visiting with friends and family. Hazel is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clem, in 1997; and all of her siblings, Martha Nelson, Esther Hermansson, Alice Rood, Gena Rood, Eilert Asleson, and Albert Asleson. Casketbearers were Daryl Bolson, Gary Bahlmann, Jan Schweitzer, Horance Magnusson, Gene Gray, and Gary McKee. Bert Seeley was an honorary casketbearer.
