Postville Herald, Thur., April 8, 1937.
--

Edna M. Holter, only daughter of Carl and Mary Holter, was born in Postville, Iowa, on April 23, 1884, and died at Mercy hospital, Oelwein, Iowa, on April 4, 1937, as the result of an auto accident which occured on April 2.

She was graduated from Postville high school and Upper Iowa University. After finishing college she taught school in Atwater, Minnesota, and in Postville, Iowa. She traveled with her father in Europe, visiting her father's native Norway. On November 9, 1910, she was united in marriage with William Hale Burling, who with his father was practicing law in this city.

She is survived by her husband W. H. Burling: two sons, Carl Frederick of East Orange, New Jersey, and Robert Hale, a freshman in Upper Iowa University: one daughter, Bernice, a senior in Iowa State College: her aged father, Carl Holter, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Burlings entire life, lived in this community, is like an open book. To her was given a clear vision of the worth-while things in a life of service for her Master. Her motto was, "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might." She was ever a busy woman for she possessed that rare and unpretentious faculty of discerning where a helping hand was most needed. Outside her home she considered her church her first interest. As president of the Women's Missionary Society, she was returning with a group of women from a meeting of the Presbyterial when the accident occurred. She taught a Sunday School class of young people, helped with the dramatic work of the church, and had been president of the Ladies Aid. She reached farther than the responsibilities connected with being a faithful homemaker and ardent church worker. She gave of her time to the constructive and philanthropic efforts of her community.

She was a charter member and past president of Chapter F T. P. E. O., a member of the Order of Eastern Star and of the Shakespeare Club.

What a precious heritage she has left to those who sorrow. "A true patriot in her home, in her church and in her community."

The funeral was held from the Community Presbyterian church in this city at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, Dr. R. F. Galloway officiating, and the large assemblage of sorrowing friends and the numerous beautiful floral offerings all attested the high place Mrs. Burling held in the hearts and homes of the people of this city and community. Interment was made in the Postville cemetery.
