Johnathan Ellis was born Oct. 23, 1812 in Middletown, New Hampshire. Died at Postville, Iowa Jan. 23, 1901.

He moved to Canada with his parents when a small boy. He removed to New York State for a residence of one year; and from there to Woodstock, Champaign County, Ohio, whence he came to Iowa in 1855 and settled on a farm northwest of Postville. He was married in Canada in the year 1833 to Miss Lusetta Hawkins, who died in Postville in 1870. Five children were born of this union, of whom H. Ellis is the only survivor. He was married to Mrs. Lydia Kelley July 28, 1874. Two children were born to them; Mrs. Wm. Krambeer, Luana, Iowa, and J. P. Ellis, Postville. The subject of our sketch was converted when sixteen years of age, and united with the Baptist Church; of this church he was a Deacon for many years. His house was the home of the preacher and sometimes the preaching place. He was very inflentual in securing the erection of a Baptist church in Postville. His sickness was long. He was confined to the house for six years, and to his bed for one year. The funeral was held at the family residence at 10:30 a.m. conducted by Rev. D. M. Parker. He was interred in the Postville Cemetery by the wife of his youth.
