Funeral services for Mrs. Erna Brainard were held Thursday, October 23, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville. The Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. Beverly Bacon was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Erna Emma Minna Dorothea (Wullner) Brainard, the daughter of Ernst Carl August and Minna Caroline Marie (Lembke) Wullner was born July 31, 1920 in Eldena, Germany. She died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997 in Gundersen Lutheran Hospital at LaCrosse, Wisc. She was 77.
Erna came to the United States when she was 3 years old. The family settled in Allamakee County. She attended the Minert School and was graduated from Postville High School.
March 20, 1940 Erna and Dale Edgar Lewis Brainard were married at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They had 3 children. They farmed all of their lives in Post Township, north of Postville.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dale, who died April 12, 1984 and a brother, Ernest Wullner.
Surviving are 2 sons, Theodore (Debra) Brainard of Chatfield, MN, and Daniel (Deborah) Brainard of Littleton, CO; a daughter, Diane (Donald) Stump of McKeon, PA; 6 grandchildren, Theresa Hurley, Elizabeth Ivers, Christina Rickertsen, Amy Scheff, Julie Scheff and Michael Brainard; 5 great grandchildren, Mary Hurley, Jennifer Hurley, Alyson Hurley, Dillon Rickertsen and Justin Brainard; a brother, William Wullner of Postville and a cousin, Ernst Wullner of Germany.
She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville and the Post-Franklin Study club. She enjoyed sewing and indoor gardening. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. Erna was the bookkeeper for their farms.
Casket bearers were Bradley, Roger, Gene, Michael and Daniel Brainard and Brian and Jane Wullner and Darwin Johnson.
