Postville Herald, Fri., Sept. 19, 1919.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.Horace Roger Wells was born at Deep River, New York, January 8, 1837, his parents passing away when he was but a mere lad. He came to Iowa in 1867 and made his home for a time with his elder brother, B. H. Wells, in Bloomfield township, Winneshiek co., and where he remained until 1872 when he was united in marriage Almira Jane Cheadle. They at once settled down to housekeeping on a farm he had already purchased about three miles northwest of Postville, and for more than forty years this place was their home, where they loved and labored and prospered. In 1912 they sold their farm and built a fine new home in Postville in which to spend the remainder of their days. A few short months after they had occupied their new home, equipped with every convenience that could add to creature comfort or lessen labor, the loved wife was suddenly stricken and passed away in February 1913.
From the time of his wife's death it has been noticable to all that Mr. Wells had been gradually failing, and though he did his best to appear his usually happy manner, it could easily be distinguished he was not the same man as before, and since March of this year, when his faithful housekeeper left him and he had to rent and leave his own home his decline has been rapid, and a few weeks ago, wearied with his burden of grief and the weight of years, he was taken to Postville hospital to be cared for, and during the noon hour last Friday, September 12, his wearied spirit took its flight to that land where happiness reigns supreme and heartaches are unknown.
Horace Wells had a wide acquaintance and many friends throughout this section. He lived a clean,, honorable and upright life; he was a manly man, who so lived that when the summons came he was prepared for the transition, than which no higher tribute need be paid his memory.
The funeral was held from the M. E. church in this city at 2:30 last Sunday afternoon, Rev. Hicks of Castalia U. B. church officiating. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
Card Of Thanks.
The relatives of Horace Wells wish to most heartily thank the kind friends and neighbors, who in any way have contributed to his comfort and happiness during the trying days of the past summer.
Ellen Wells Hoyt. Clara Wells Palmerton.
