John Smith Dresser was born near Woodstock, Ohio, July 15, 1850. When about five years old the family came to Iowa, making the journey by wagon. They settled on a farm one mile north of Postville.

On January 8, 1878, he was united in marriage with Margaret Eunice Eaton and to this union were born five children. The wife, four children and one grandchild still survive, the older boy having died at the age of four years.

Mr. Dresser was next to the youngest of a family of twelve children, seven girls and five boys. Those living are Mrs. Henry Webb of Postville, Iowa; Mrs. James Haggard of West Concord, Minnesota; Mrs. Robert McCready of Cherokee, Iowa; Mrs. Harriet Bayless and Mrs. H. H. Hagensick of Elkader, Iowa.

Of his immediate family Mr. Dresser is survived by his wife, three daughters -- Mrs. H. M. Conrow of Waterloo, Mrs. R. M. Hecker of Postville, and Miss Ina of New York City, and one son, Lawrence, at home.

Mr. Dresser was one of the oldest residents of this locality and no man ever enjoyed to a greater degree the universal respect of his fellow men. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and his word was as good as his bond. His life's work was a tiller of the soil and as a farmer he was eminently successful. He was also a lover of his home and here his leisure hours were spent enjoying the companionship of his family and friends.

The funeral was held from the Postville Community church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by the Rev. J. A. Saathoff.

John S. Dresser, 72, passed away last Friday morning following a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. Born in Woodstock, Ohio, Mr. Dresser came to Postville when five years old.
