Military rites were being planned Thursday for Thomas R. Goodell, 93, last civil war veteran of this community. He died New Year's day and will be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery Saturday.
Born at Cuba, Ill., August 29, 1847, Goodell enlisted in Co. A, 18th Illinois Infantry, at the age of 15, when the war was about half over. He fought under General Grant and was with General Sherman on the latter's famous march to the sea. As a result of a measles attack while serving in the army, Goodell had suffered with poor eyes most of his life.
