Died.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

Burhans -- At his residence in Castalia, March 17th, 1899, John H. Burhans, aged 68 years, of dropsy and heart disease.

Thus passes away one of the oldest settlers of this section as he came to Springfield about 45 years ago. He came to Postville soon after the advent of the railroad, and lived here until a few years ago. For years he worked at his trade of carpenter and for some time he conducted the old Burlington House. His wife died about two years ago. He leaves but one child, a son. Mr. Burhans was a genial and companionable man and so far as we know never had an enemy. He served in the war of the rebellion, we believe he was a member of the 6th Iowa cavalry. The services were held at the Methodist church at Castalia on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Barton of Postville officiating. The interment was in the Postville cemetery, by the side of his companion. The services were in charge of the Masonic fraternity, Ellison Orr officiating. And thus we say good by to our brother, neighbor and friend. May your sleep be peaceful and your awakening be glorious.

Since writing the above the following obituary notice was handed in.

John H. Burhans was born May 6th, 1831, in Otsego Co., N. Y., where he spent the early part of his life. Later he emigrated to Bock Co., Wis., where he married Sarah A. Davis, Sept. 5th, 1852. Three years later they moved to Iowa and settled near the present site of Ossian where they lived until 1857, when they moved to Springfield, Clayton county.

In 1861 Mr. Burhans enlisted in Co. I, 6th Iowa cavalry, and served until the close of the war. In 1867 they moved to Postville where they lived until 1888 when they moved to Castalia, at which place they resided until the time of their death, his wife having preceded him to the great beyond about two years. His death occured at the home of his son, Friday night, March 17th, 1899.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Burhans three children, two girls and one boy were born and the son only survives his parents.
