A memorial service for Everett Cook will be held Friday, January 26, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Gary Catterson will officiate. Prescilla Miene will be the organist and Ronald Meyer will be the soloist. Inurnment will be in the Postville Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Everett Uhl Cook, the son of Perry Everett and Stella Marguerite (Uhl) Cook, was born October 28, 1905, in Post Township, Allamakee County, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, January 18, 2001 in the Good Samaritan Center at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 95 years, 2 months and 20 days.
He attended the local schools and then went to Chicago where he attended the Greer Electrical College for one year. He worked as a farm laborer in his early years and then was a machine operator in Chicago from 1928 to 1932, and then in Waterloo, Iowa, from 1944-1947. He moved to Postville, Iowa and was a mechanic for Falb Motor Company for 25 years and then in Electrical Construction for 10 years. Everett worked as the maintenance person at the City Hall.
In addition to his work, Everett served on the Postville Fire Department for over 50 years and was the secretary-treasurer for 25 years. Everett was the Scoutmaster and worked with the Postville Boy Scouts for over 18 years. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, having served 2 terms on the Board of Trustees; a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, and served on the City Council. Everett served as older Iowan Legislator in 1982. He helped to remodel the kitchen at the City Hall in preparation for the Meal Site Program.
On October 17, 1931, he was married to Jeannette Cook in Chicago. To this union 2 children were born, a son, Noel, and a daughter, Dixie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Jeannette, who died September 27, 1985, his stepmother, Christine and a stepsister, Eloise, a brother, Burr Cook, and his wife, Helene Cook, and a son-in-law, Roger Frantz.
Surviving is a son, Noel Cook and his wife, Rochelle, of Postville, a daughter Dixie Frantz of Lula, GA, 6 grandchildren: Lynn (Cook) Hangartner and her husband, Terry, of Byron, MN, Aaron Cook and special friend, Trudy Kruse, of Storm Lake, IA, Collin Cook and his wife, Sue, of West Branch, IA, Corey Cook and his wife, Krista, of Marysville, WA, Dorn Cook of Phoenix, AZ, Laura (Franz) Putnam and husband, Bill, of Lawrenceville, GA; 15 great grandchildren: Robert and Ryan Hangartner; Jessica, Casey, Cody, and Colt Cook; Kayd and Ethan Cook; Stephanie Cook Bach (Kevin), Sara, Shannon, Payton, and Paige Cook, and Jeannie and Claire Putnam and one great great grandchild, Camden Dru Bach.
