Mrs. Sarah Johnson (Knudtson)who for the last 29 years has made her home with N.J. Johnson of this city passed away at his home Thursday evening March 22, 1923.
The deceased was born in Sigdahl Norway on May 23, 1843 and when only a little girl came to America with her father, her sister and brother and finally settled with her uncle on Round Prairie.
In 1862 she was married to John Johnson with whom she lived happily until 1873 when he was called to rest. For a time after the death of her husband she was forced to hire help to take care of the farm but when the children had grown sufficiently to be of assistance to her she took the management of the farm herself. Here she remained until 1894 when the estate was settled and at her own request she went to live at the home of her son Nels where she remained until her recent death.
She enjoyed fairly good health up to her last weeks and her patience during the days she was left helpless was remarkable. She was a devoted mother and loved by all who met her.
All of her children survive and were at her bedside when she passed away. They are Isabelle, Marian, Nels, John G. and Mrs Albert Thompson of Waukon and Mrs. Andrew Christensen of Lansing, Also 22 grand children and 10 great grandchildren remain to grieve the loss of a beloved grandmother.
Funeral services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Rasmusson officiating after the services she was taken to the West Paint Creek cemetery where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband.
