Ken Akira Quandahl, age 26, and a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps, died of leukemia Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the U.S. Naval Academy Main Chapel at Annapolis, Maryland. A Marine Honor Guard moved the remains from the chapel to the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery. The Marines performed the twenty-one gun salute. The American Flag was presented to his mother on behalf of the President of the United States and the nation for his time spent in the service. Scottish bag pipes were played at the chapel and burial site. His remains were interred at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery.

Ken Akira Quandahl, son of Larry and Mitsuko (Hosagi) Quandahl, was born in Yokosuka, Japan. * His birthdate was not included in this obituary. * He earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineerig from the U.S. Navy Academy. He moved to Warrenton, Virginia from Jacksonville, North Carolina two years ago. He enjoyed flying, model-ship building and fishing.

Ken is survived by his parents, Mitsuko Quandahl of Catlett, Virginia and Larry Quandahl of Sterling, Virginia; a sister, Naomi Quandahl of Catlett, Virginia, and his grandparents, Kiyond Hosagi of Japan and Ruth Quandahl of Waukon, Iowa; his aunts, Dixie (Jim) Madden of Paoli, Oklahoma, and Sally (Dennis) Noland of Elizabeth, Colorado; his uncles, Allen Quandahl, Joe Quandahl and Adam Quandahl, all of Waukon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Richard Quandahl who died April 16, 2000.
