Death of a Former Well Known Lansing Lady
Lansing: friends in South Lansing and elsewhere were surprised Friday of the death of Mrs. Evelyn Barnes, for 35 years a resident there after coming from England, and the news was received by all who knew her with regret.
Miss Evelyn Barnes was born in Hereford, England, Feb. 7, 1857, and died Jan. 22, 1937, at the Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hartley residence in Union City township where she has made her home for the past year and a half.
Miss Barnes came to this country in 1902 to live with her brother, W. J. Barnes of Lansing. She was educated in England and a member of the Episcopal Church of England, which faith she maintained to the end.
She leaves to mourn her passing two brothers, W. J. Barnes of New Albin and T. J. Barnes of Woluerhamtpon, (sic) England, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Lansing Federated church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Albert Kuhn of Dubuque University officiating there and at the graveside in Oak Hill cemetery, where interment was made. Geo. Aschom, Mrs. Alice Greenley and Mrs. Lola Aschom sang “Rock of Ages” and “Abide With Me,” with Mrs. L.O. Terry organist. Casket bearers were the Messrs. D. A. Holmes, Albert Kehr, H. W. Gaunitz, Con Casey, Fred Schafer and George Aschom.Allamakee Journal
