Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Harry James Theis, age 91, of Lansing, Iowa, were held Monday, May 19 at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Herbert Tegeler officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa with Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were his grandchildren: Steve Theis, Mike Theis, Kevin Theis, Joel Theis, Tim Theis, Todd Theis, Jeff Theis, Chris Theis, Tom Theis, Mark Manning, and Mike Manning. Honorary bearers were Lori Bartruff, Vicki Schmidt, Jani Carlson, Jodi Olson, Tami Juta, Jennifer St. Arnold, Teri Fox, Lisa Theis, Kim Olson, Debbie Theis, and Marri Williams.
Harry James Theis, son of John and Mary (Kirst) Theis, was born May 22, 1905 in Mitchell County, Iowa. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1923. On May 31, 1927 he married Hazel Marr at Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville, Iowa. (In 12 days, Harry and Hazel would have been married for 70 years). At the age of 17, Harry became a partner in his first clothing store located in Riceville. He then owned and operated Theis Clothing Store in Waukon for many years and also had interests in men's clothing stores in Webster City, Iowa and Elkader, Iowa. After retiring from the clothing business. Harry managed the Harpers Ferry branch * a portion of the sentence is missing here, then ends with ... 15 years.* He served on the First Board of Trustees of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Harry was a member of Knights of Columbus in the Fourth Degree. He and Hazel lived in Harpers Ferry, Iowa in their home overlooking the Mississippi River for many years before moving to Lansing, Iowa.
Harry James Theis died Friday, May 16, 1997 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Dale Theis; 4 brothers, Carl Theis, Francis Theis, Milborne Theis, and Leonard Theis; and a daughter-in-law, Myrtle (Ahlstrom) Theis.
Harry is survived by his wife, Hazel; 3 sons, John (Jan) Theis of Macomb, Illinois, Jim (Becky) Theis of Clinton, Missouri, and Tom (Virginia) Theis of Hiawatha, Iowa; 1 daughter, Linda (Mike) Manning of Lansing, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Karin (Kenny) Manning of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; and a brother Paul Theis of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
