Phyllis A. Hammel, 76, of Lansing, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at her home in Lansing. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 18, at 1 p.m. at the Community Center in Lansing. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Arlene was born April 22, 1928, in Lansing, the daughter of Dwight and Bessie (Darnell) Van Brocklin. She graduated from Lansing High School in 1946. She married Donald J. Hammel November 19, 1946.
Phyllis spent her life in Lansing where she was a homemaker, loving mother, and good friend. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, entertaining, and traveling. Phyllis was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Survivors include seven children, Judith (John Lewis) Hammel of St. Louis Park, Minn., Donald F. (Darlene Larsen) Hammel of Lansing, Nancy Hammel of La Crosse, Wis., Bette (Joe) Bilskemper of Onalaska, Wis., Joyce (Tom) Cota of Harpers Ferry, Sandra (Dave) Darling of Lansing, and Carl (Kari Roan) Hammel of Hampton, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Shultz of Osage, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence McKee of Lansing and Joyce (Gene) Shogren of Waterville; two brothers, Ervin "Bud" Van Brocklin of Chandler, Ariz., and Robert (Kathryn) Van Brocklin of Lansing; a brother-in-law, Walter Boltz of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Edna Van Brocklin of Hopkins, Minn.; and her special friend of the past 16 years, Robert Sweeney of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, who died in November of 1984; two children, Gregory and Joan; a daughter-in-law, Linda; a grandson-in-law, Aaron; two brothers, Clarence and Ray Van Brocklin; a sister, Ada Boltz; a brother-in-law, Art McKee; and two sisters-in-law, Selma and Dorothy Van Brocklin.
