Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for lifetime area resident, Esther H. Grotegut, age 70, were held Friday May 10 at Salem United Church of Christ. The 11 a.m. services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ella Marsland. Burial was in the church cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Kirk Snitker, Craig Grotegut, Marc Bergan, Osmond Quandahl, Loren Amundson, and Dr. Dean Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Schmidt, Roger Hess, Edward Shelby, Calvin Snitker, Duane Bergan, and Darrell Pierce.
Esther was born February 28, 1921 in rural Waukon, Iowa to Harris and Henrietta (Hendrickson) Ellingson. She attended school at District #8 in Winneshiek County and graduated in normal training from Decorah High School in 1939. She also took some college courses and taught rural school for about 10 years in Winneshiek County. On August 15, 1943 she and Willard Grotegut were married at Salem UCC parsonage. She was a member of Salem UCC and its Ladies Guild.
Esther died Wednesday, May 8, 1991 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Orville Ellingson.
She is survived by her husband, Willard; 3 daughters, Diane (Gene) Brown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ann (Neil) Krumme and Wendy (Mike) Kimber, both of Waukon, Iowa; 2 sons, Randy Grotegut and Gary Grotegut, both of Waukon, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Adelaide (Edward) Shelby of Brookfield, Illinois, Kathleen (Calvin) Snitker of Waukon, Iowa, Cheryl (Duane) Bergan of Decorah, Iowa, and Sandra (Darrell) Pierce of Sacramento, California; and 2 brothers, Tilman Ellingson and Mervin Ellingson, both of Decorah, Iowa.
