Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Holmes were held Saturday, March 21, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, IA. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated. Kim Schutte was the soloist and Beverly Bacon was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangement. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, IA.

Dorothy Marie (DeSart) Holmes, the daughter of Ralph and Anna Mae (Kohler) DeSart, was born June 11, 1911, at West Bond, IA. She died Wednesday morning, March 18, 1998, at her home in Postville, IA. She had reached the age of 86 years, nine months and seven days.

Dorothy was graduated from the Elgin High School and then attended Pitzes College of Cosmetology at Waterloo, IA.

She lived in Elgin, IA from 1914 to 1930 and then moved to West Union, IA until 1937. Dorothy was married to Thomas Holmes at West Union in October of 1937. They lived in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada from 1937 to 1940. Dorothy operated a Beauty Shop in West Union and Waterloo, IA. She lived in Waterloo from 1940 to 1981, where she owned her own shop. In 1981 she moved to Postville to live with her sister, Nina Riser.

She is survived by many friends. Preceding her in death is her husband, her parents, her sister, Nina Riser, who died in 1994 and a brother-in-law, Ed Riser.

Dorothy was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville and the Women's Association. She was active in the quilting group at church. She was also a member of the National Cosmetology Association and a volunteer for the local Blood Drive of the Red Cross. Dorothy made all of her own clothes and also sewed for other people in her spare time.
