Funeral services were held for Leona Beatrice Lonning, age 89, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 1998 at the St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were her six sons.

Leona Beatrice Lonning, daughter of Lars and Bertha (Helgeson) Hanson, was born September 14, 1909 in Fulton Township, Webster County, Iowa. She attended school in Vincent, Iowa. On April 3, 1926 she married Lennie Lonning in Olathe, Kansas. In 1935 they moved to Allamakee County, Iowa where they farmed until 1969 when they moved to Waukon, Iowa. In the early 1930's, she worked as a telephone operator for a time. For many years she was a cook and worked in the laundry department at Northgate Care Center. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its Rachel Circle and the VFW Auxiliary. Leona died Saturday, December 12, 1998 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lennie, a son, Dennis Lonning; 4 sisters, Gladys, Alvina, Belle, and Louella; and and 4 brothers, Gunder Hanson, Gunder Alvin Hanson, Helge Hanson, and Martin Hanson; and a grandson.

Leona is survived by her six sons: Roger (Marjorie) Lonning of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Richard Lonning of Mason City, Iowa, Dr. Philip (Carole) Lonning of Humboldt, Iowa, Charles Lonning, Frank (Donna) Lonning, and Gary Lonning, all of Waukon, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildfren; and 3 sisters-in-law, Beulah Moon of Wellington, Colorado, Helen Millsap of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and Verna Wikre of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
