Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Former Waukon, Iowa resident and Keokuk, Iowa native, Frances E. Fellows, age 93, died at her Houston, Texas home Sunday July 29, 2001. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 1 at the Riverside United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas and burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing, Iowa in Allamakee County on August 4, 2001.
Frances was born in Keokuk, Iowa April 7, 1908 to Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Hogle. She taught public school music in Waukon, Iowa before her marriage to Kenneth Fellows on June 12, 1935. Kenneth was a native of Lansing, Iowa and was a newspaper reporter for the Waukon Democrat when they met. Frances retained friendships and affection for Northeast Iowa throughout her life.
Frances attained a bachelor of arts degree in 1930 and a master of arts degree in 1933 from the University of Iowa. A member of Alpha Delta Pi, she was elected to Mortar Board and later was inducted into the University President's Club. An active member of Chapter AX P.E.O., her membership in that organization embraced 72 years. She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. She was a past president of the United Methodist Women and worked diligently in furthering the music and worship programs of the church. She saw service on the Wesley Foundation Board of the University of Houston and was a long-time volunteer at the Houston Speech and Hearing Center.
Although she was identified with a number of charitable organizations, Frances gained her greatest personal satisfaction from making herself available to friends in special need and in assisting the underprivileged. She was a woman of marked intelligence and many talents, recognized for her calm judgment and understanding. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth, a sister Mary Florence Hogle, and a brother Charles S. Hogle.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Ann F. (John D.) Christenson, Saint Peter, Minnesota and Dr. Carol Fellows (Dr. Henry C.) Louderbough of Klamath Falls, Oregon; 2 sons, Richard K. (Vivian) Fellows of Austin, Texas and William C. (Colleen) Fellows of Houston, Texas; 4 grandchildren: Nathaniel Christenson, Katharine Christenson (Jonathan)Dale, Patricia Lee Fellows, Jeffrey Fellows, and 1 great-granddaughter Magdalena Susan Dale.
