Joseph Henry Harnack, the son of Joseph Harnack and Caroline Schmidt Harnack, was born on April 9, 1893 in Farmersburg township, Clayton county, Iowa. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Garnavillo on July 4, 1893 and confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on April 8, 1906. He died at his home on October 20, 1963 at the age of 70 years, six months and 11 days.

The family moved to the Postville area in 1902. He was married to Florence Heins at Elkader on April 25, 1922. He served in the United States Army in World War I, including a term of overseas duty, and was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 45 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville and a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Christ and Lester Harnack of Postville, John of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fred of Waukon; and two sisters, Anna, Mrs. Henry Mohs of Postville and Mrs. Laura Schmidt of Owatonna, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife; one brother, Louis of Postville; three sisters, Emma, Mrs. William Eberling of Postville, Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Block of Postville, Lena, Mrs. John Sebastian of Postville; a number of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services are being held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on Wednesday, October 23, with burial in the Postville cemetery, the Rev. Charles E. Witt officiating.
