Ronald Smerud
Ronald G. Smerud, age 60, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 5 at the New Albin Community Center, with Rev. Tina Keenan officiating. Thornburg-Devries Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Ronald George Smerud was born March 2, 1950 at Waukon. He was the son of George S. and Betty Weymiller Smerud. He received his education up to the eighth grade in a one-room school in Winnebago Valley and graduated from St. George High School in 1968. He married Sandy Ellefson, and they later divorced. September 6, 1984 he was united in marriage to Roxanne Gage in Waukon.
Ron was raised on the family farm in the Winnebago Valley near New Albin. Ron was a carpenter/contractor and the owner of Smerud Construction. He built many beautiful homes in Iowa and Wisconsin. He was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather, and would help anyone. He was an avid golfer, pool player and Viking/Packer fan. He enjoyed working with his daughter, sons and his sisters and brother in his business.
He is survived by his wife, Roxanne Gage Smerud of Lansing; two sons, Logan and Nicholas, both of Lansing; six brothers and sisters, Gordon of New Albin, Dean (Mary) of New Albin, Janette (James) Brennan of Lansing, David of Tomball, TX, Nancy (Shane) Carroll of New Albin and Carla (Walter) Rolfs of Lansing; three grandchildren, Jeremy, Josh and Kayla Waters; one great-grandson, Brayden; a brother-in-law, Paul Snodgrass of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kelly Deeney; one brother, Jerry; one sister, Sheryl Snodgrass; two grandchildren, Justin and Jessica; and a sister-in-law, Nadine Smerud.Waukon Standard, March 9, 2011
