Leo T. O’Malley, 82, of Webster City died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 3 at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City, with Rev. Stephen Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, March 2 from 4-9 p.m. at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center, with recitation of the Rosary to begin at 7 p.m. followed by a scripture service at 7:15 p.m.
Leo Thomas O’Malley, son of Thomas and Florence Fahey O’Malley, was born August 7, 1928 at Waukon. He received his education in the St. Patrick’s Catholic School at Waukon. He was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
August 22, 1950, he married Virginia Mae (Jeannie) Walsh at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army from May of 1951 to April of 1953 during the Korean War. He was assigned to a signal Corps in the 5th Army. He spent part of his service in Japan. The couple had resided at McGregor, Waterloo and Dubuque. They moved to Webster City in 1956. He retired from Qwest Communications in 1993, after 43 years of employment. After retirement, he worked with his son, Mark, in the O’Malley Steamagic carpet cleaning business. He also spent many winters with his daughter and family in Arizona, as well as traveling many other places.
Leo is survived by his wife, Jeannie; sons, John O’Malley of Fort Dodge and Mark O’Malley of Webster City; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Terry Halder of Tucson, AZ and Donna and Don Johnston of Idaho Falls, ID; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Jim Dougherty of Decorah and Jean and Gilbert Kurtz-Gander of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Byrnes.
He was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Webster City Moose Family Center. He enjoyed the time he had with his family and his coffee friends. He will be deeply missed by all.Waukon Standard, March 2, 2011
