Frank F. Hangartner

Frank F. Hangartner, the son of Frank S. Hangartner and Mary Keller Hangartner, was born on February 8, 1877 in Middleton, Wisconsin. He was baptized as an infant in Wisconsin and confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on March 22, 1891, by the Rev. John Gass.

He was married to Emma Miller on March 8, 1900. To this union were born seven children. His first wife, Emma, preceded him in death on September 17, 1922. He was married to Ella Renzman on September 16, 1927. The family made their home on a farm west of Postville until 1944, when they moved to the town of Postville.

To the best of our knowledge, Frank was the last living member of the famous first Postville Baseball team. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, a past member of the Postville Farmer's Co-op board and the Postville Telephone Company board. Throughout his life he was actively interested in the progress and welfare of the community. He took an active part in the life of the congregation of which he was a member for almost 70 years.

Though he was afflicted with a disabling disease for many years, he remained active up until the last year, and was confined to bed for a period of six weeks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Emma; two children, Thomas Harold and Florence; three brothers, Jacob and Conrad of Postville and Will of Estherville; and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Powers of Ossian.

He is survived by his wife, Ella; three sons, John of Glendale, California; Frank of Whittier, California and Robert of Postville; two daughters, Gretchen, Mrs. Roger Harris of Postville and Margaret, Mrs. William Volmar of Sacramento, California; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Kiner of Chester, South Dakota; 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

He passed away at his home on October 21, 1959 at the age of 82 years, eight months and 13 days.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Postville, on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Postville cemetery with the Rev. Charles E. Witt officiating.
