Virgil C. Hammel

Former Resident Is Arkansas Murder Victim

A former Postville resident, Virgil C. Hammel, was found murdered in his Hot Springs, AK, apartment, Nov. 22. The cause of death has been listed as multiple stab wounds.

According to Hot Springs police, Hammel, 63, was found by his son John, also of Hot Springs, at around 3:15 p.m. The younger Hammel had not heard from his father in several days and after several attempts to call him, he let himself into the apartment where he discovered the body. Hammel had apparently been dead for about three days.

Hot Springs police said that his home had been ransacked, and that Hammel's car was missing. Two suspects have been arrested, and the car and several other items taken from the apartment have been recovered. While the two men in custody have admitted to the robbery, they accused each other of the murder.

Virgil Hammel was the son of the late Leonard Hammels of Postville, and graduated from Postville High School in 1938.

Hammel is survived by his son John, and two daughters: Mary and Sharon, all of Hot Springs.
