G. Schellhammer Dies Wednesday
George Schellhammer, 93, a resident of Allamakee county for 77 years, died Wednesday at the home of his son John in Winneshiek county, due to the infirmities of age.
He was a native of Germany where he was born Jan. 15, 1857. At 16 years of age, in 1873, he came to the Postville vicinity where he was employed until 1888 when he returned to Germany and was married to Katherine Fitz. He brought his bride to Iowa, settling on a farm near Lansing which was their home until her death a few years ago. In his advancing years Mr. Schellhammer received care at the farm home of his son John.
Four sons, John mentioned above, Gottlieb, Charles and George of Lansing, and three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Rissman, Mrs. Flora Marti and Mrs. Laura Oesterle of near Lansing. There are 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Martin's funeral home and 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church at Churchtown. The Rev. C.H. Willemsen will officiate.
Burial in the Lansing Ridge cemetery, six grandsons serving as pall bearers. They are Herbert Zimmerman, Harlan and Morris Schellhammer, Eugene Oesterle, Harvey Rissman and Harold Marti.
