Lifetime area resident Leonard Bruce Smith, age 80, died Sunday, July 26, 1987 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home with Pastor Verdon Swenson officiating. Burial was in Rossville, Iowa. Casket bearers were Steve Rubendahl, Eldo Roffman, George Decker, Steve Smith, Bill Smith, and Kenneth Ewing.

Leonard was born February 15, 1907 in Hobart, Oklahoma to Stephan and Alfreda (Ewing) Smith. He attended Evergreen Country school in Allamakee County, Iowa. On February 15, 1929 he married Frances Koons in Postville, Iowa. He had been employed as a farmer, carpenter, logger, and had worked at HyGrade Meat Packing Plant in Postville, Iowa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in the woods, planting lots of trees and hunting arrow heads.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Goldie Smith and two brothers, George Smith and Milburn Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; 5 daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Irene) Suckow of Postville, Iowa, Mrs. Roy (Evelyn) Highley of Center Point, Iowa, Mrs. Roger (Doris) Potts of Robbins, Iowa, Mrs. John (Jackie) Berndsen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Richard (Opal) Goeke of Masonville, Iowa; 3 sons, Sydney Smith of Center Point, Iowa, Ivan Smith of Fayette, Iowa, and John Smith of Waukon, Iowa; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Cora) Decker of Waukon, Iowa, Mrs. Louis (Sylbert) Christofferson of Decorah, Iowa and Mrs. Paul (Alice) Kunkat of Harmony, Minnesota and a brother, Ivan Smith of Postville, Iowa.
