Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services were held Saturday September 5 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church for Mabel L. Monserud, age 91, who died Wednesday, September 2, 1987 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Pastor April Larson officiated at the 2 p.m. services. Burial was in the church cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Darwin and Darrell Bosier, Michael Sersland, Clayton Monserud, Dennis Burgess, and Steven Schnoebelen.
Mabel was born May 2, 1896 near Lansing, Iowa to John and Nora (Ellefson) Hunstad. She attended rural school near Thompson corner and Valders Teachers' College in Decorah, Iowa. On October 15, 1918 she married William Monserud at Old East Paint Creek Church. She was a homemaker and had taught rural school in Eitzen, Minnesota, New Albin, and near Postville, Iowa. They were lifetime area residents and farmed near Harpers Ferry, Iowa for all of their 62 years of marriage. William died October 8, 1981. Mabel moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to live with a daughter in 1982. She was a member of OEPC where she had been active in the Priscilla circle.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Marie and Mabel Elizabeth.
Survivors include a son, Wesley Monserud of Monona, Iowa and 4 daughters, Mrs. Grace Sersland of Decorah, Iowa, Mrs. Harry (Nora Ann) Burgess of Marion, Iowa, Mrs. Robert (Edna) Bosier and Mrs. Clayton (Edith) Schnoebelen, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Ken (Emma) Fuller of San Diego, California.
