Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Richard Jacob William Hangartner were held Wednesday, May 27, 1987 at 10 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated. Interment was in the Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Luana, Iowa. Pallbearers were Kelly Wander, Kim Wander, Kyle Wander, Jason Hangartner, Bradley Rekow, and Ronald Sanborn.
Richard was the son of Jacob and Wilmina "Minnie" (Heckman) Hangartner. He was born May 13, 1914 in Postville, Iowa. He died Monday morning, May 25, 1987 in the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. He attended the rural schools near his home. He was married to Violet Miller in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville by the Rev. Frederich R. Ludwig. They had 3 daughters. They began their married life by farming in Clermont Township, Fayette County and moved to their present farm in November of 1953.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Christopher Michael Rekow; 4 brothers, Cleon Hangartner, in infancy, Alpha Hangartner, Jacob Hangartner, and Oscar Hangartner; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Carl (Gladys) Lubke, Bessie Heckman Bray, and Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Westcott.
Surviving are his wife, Violet; 3 daughters, Mrs. James (Julienne) Wander, Elgin, Iowa, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Sanborn, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Bradley (Peggy) Rekow of Postville, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Kelly, Kim and Kyle Wander, Jason Hangartner and Dave and Andrew Sanborn and B.J. and Katie Rekow; 2 great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Wander and a sister Mrs. Harris (Isabell) Kjosa of Clermont, Iowa.
