Dale Martin
Dale Martin, formerly of Waukon and Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Winona, MN following a year-long battle with cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 25 Second Avenue NW in Waukon, with a light lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be directed to St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Waukon.
Dale was born July 21, 1925 in Minnesota to John Willard and Ann (nee Vanvooren) Martin. They moved to Hawarden, where Dale attended schools and graduated from Hawarden High School. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) with a BA in teaching after serving in the Navy during WWII in both the Pacific and European theaters. He later earned his Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley.
Dale met Anita Prichard during his college days and they were married in May of 1949. Dale taught and coached in Schaller and Maynard. In 1959, he left teaching to become a Federal Probation Officer and the family moved to Cedar Falls, where they were active in St. Timothy‘s Methodist Church. In 1964 the family moved to Sioux City, where Dale served as the Chief Probation Officer for the Northern District of Iowa. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1982. In 1988, he and Anita relocated to Waukon to be closer to their children and grandchildren.Dale was an avid do-it-yourselfer, a faithful Hawkeye fan and enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, traveling with Anita and any activity that included family and friends. He delighted in the times that family was together and was well known for loving a competitive card game in which he always kept score and usually won. Following his retirement, he also enjoyed spending summers at their lake cabin on Lower Bottle Lake in Park Rapids, MN.
Dale was preceded in death by Anita, the love of his life for 60 years; his parents; and a brother, Ralph Martin. He is survived by his sister, Carol Park of Dell Rapids, SD; his children, Janet (Mark) Moeller of Winona, MN, Tricia (Gary) Frederickson of Park Rapids, MN, John (Chris) Martin of Longmont, CO, and Jane (Rich Behls) Martin of Arlington Heights, IL; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
