Funeral services were held Friday, April 29 for Esther I. Sunderman, age 76, of Waukon, Iowa, who died Tuesday, April 26, 1988 at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The Rev. Henry Heinbuch conducted the 11 a.m. services held at Zion United Church of Christ and burial was in Ebenezer cemetery, rural Waukon, Iowa. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Paul Peterson, Jim Campbell, Nelson Sherman, William Sherman, John Shafer, and John Leschensky.

She was born October 3, 1911 in Jefferson Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to Henry and Tilda (Fossum) Sunderman. She attended rural Allamakee County schools and Waukon High School. She received her nursing training at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She taught rural school for one year, worked as company nurse for Commonwealth Utility Company in Chicago, as a nurse for Presbyterian mission on an Indian reservation in New Mexico and for many years as a nurse at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. During WWII she served as an Army nurse. She was a member of the Zion UCC, the church council and other church groups, Normandia Club and the hospital auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her sisters, Ella Hansmeier, Beulah Leefeldt, Frieda and Florentine (in their teen years), and five siblings in infancy.
