Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Former area resident Francis J. Rooney, age 71, of rural Steuben, Wisconsin, died suddenly at his home Tuesday, April 5, 1988 after an apparent heart attack. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8 at St.Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca, Wisconsin with the Rev. Eugene Wolf officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors by the Daugherty-Larson American Legion Post of Steuben. Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Charles Grady, Wayne Miene, Ronald Bruns, Albert Moose, Don Grady, Terry Grady, Allan Wahlz, and Willard Miene.
Francis was born May 30, 1916 in Watertown, South Dakota to James F. and Margaret (McGeough) Rooney. He attended rural schools in the Hanover area in Allamakee County, Iowa. He married Alice Gilson at St.Benedict's Church, Decorah, Iowa.*The marriage date is not listed in the obituary.* He served from 1942 to 1946 in the army serving in Japan. He was a member of St.Patrick's Church, Seneca and the American Legion Post in Steuben.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Catherine Grady, and Marie Bruns.
Surviving are his wife, Alice; 4 sons, Dennis Rooney of Steuben, Wisconsin, Jim Rooney of Gays Mills, Wisconsin, Mick Rooney of Eastman, Wisconsin, and Greg Rooney of Lone Rock, Wisconsin; 2 daughters, Karen, Mrs. Greg Fisher of Eastman, Wisconsin and Peggy, Mrs. Jim Gallagher of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; 2 brothers, George Rooney and Cletus Rooney, and a sister, Theresa Rooney, all of Waukon, Iowa.
