Geo. W. Harris, Postville Pioneer, Passes Wed'sday

Born in Ohio, the Deceased Came Here 80 Years Ago With Parents

It is with sincere regret we are called upon to chronicle the passing of George W. Harris, a Post township pioneer, whose demise on Wednesday evening last brought to a close the life of one of the oldest and best known residents of this section and a man of many good qualities of head and heart, who ever had a cheery greeting for all, and whose virtues far outnumbered any frailities he may have had.

George W. Harris, son of Elisha and Margaret Patterson Harris, was born December 22, 1851, in Morgan county, Ohio, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Folsom, in Postville on July 31, 1935, at the age of 83 years, seven months and nine days.

He came with his parents to Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa, in 1854, where his early life was spent on the home farm and most of the remainder of his life was spent in this community.

He was married to Sarah Ellen Laughlin, May 4, 1873. His wife and two sons, Gerald and Roger, preceded him in death. He is survived by four children, Warner Harris, Mrs. Mabel Folsom, and Mrs. Nina Swenson, all of Postville, and Mrs. Hazel Folsom of Osage. Also 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother, viz. Elizabeth Minert of Emporia, Kansas, 91 years of age, Mrs. J. R. Laughlin of Postville, aged 85 years, and Henry Harris of California.

In his early life he became a member of the Bethel United Brethren church and has always been a faithful church worker.

He has tilled his soil, worked, and brought forth fruit and flowers and friends.

The funeral was held from the Community Presbyterian church in Postville on Saturday afternoon last, conducted by Rev. R. F. Galloway of this city, and assisted by Rev. J. H. Hamshire, pastor of the United Brethren church. Interment was made in the family plot in Minert cemetery.
