Robert Carithers Bachtell, Colonel, USAF (Retired) of Vienna, VA, was born to parents Ralph and Gertrude Prior Bachtell on Jan. 12, 1922 in Postville. He died of cancer on Feb. 19, 1992 at the Hospice Center of Northern Virginia. He was 70.

He was a graduate of the University of Maryland and the National War College and completed 15 hours of graduate work in International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. For combat sercice in World War II, he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 11 Air Medals. Upon retirement in 1972, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Leona Meyer Bachtell; daughters Barbara B. Butkus of Tampa, FL; Nancy B. Lough of Salem, VA; and Jane B. Hammell of Vienna, VA; and four grandchildren. Other survivors include his older brother, Charles B. Bachtell of Berwun, IL.

Funeral services are being conducted by the Reverend JerryL. LiaBraaten, Pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA. Burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
