Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Charles Albert Sommer, age 74, died Friday, February 24, 1989 at his rural Waukon, Iowa home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 27 at St.Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Mt.Olivet Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Joel, Jeff, James, and Troy Sommer, Kent Schulte, Daryn Bauermeister, Danny Shogren, and Mark Wernimont. Honorary pallbearers were Eldon Hansmeier, Frank Hager, Ronnie White, Merton Palmer, Melvin Steffenson, Charles Christianson, Merle Ruckdaschel, and Otto Schuttemeier.
Charles was born December 2, 1914 in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin to Nicholas and Eleanor (Lape) Sommer. He attended school through the eighth grade in Mankato and Owatonna, Minnesota. He had lived in Waukon since the 1930s. During the 1930s he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps cutting brush along the Mississippi River. On September 29, 1936 he married Evalena May Johnson in Waukon, Iowa. He was an independent livestock hauler and truck driver. He had worked at a bakery and a shoe store in Lansing, Iowa. He was a member of St.Patrick's Church and the Antique Car Club. He was an avid antique collector.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Wall and Irene Wernimont.
Surviving are his wife, three sons, Charles Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas, Gerald J. and Cletus D. of Waukon, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Jean Ann) Bauermeister of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Mrs. Earl (Linda L.) Schulte of Waukon, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a sister, Clara Pohl of Mankato, Minnesota.
