John F. Howes, age 69, of Waukon, Iowa died Tuesday October 18, 1988. Funeral services were held Friday October 21 at 11 a.m. at St.Patrick's Church with Father Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Mt.Oilvet Cemetery with Hanson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Larry Byrnes, Kenneth and Keith Fahey, Ralph Lyons, Pat Curtin, Larry Magner, Ed O'Neill, and Tony Urell.

John was born November 22, 1918 in Waukon to John J. and Nonie (Waters) Howes. He attended Waukon schools. In May of 1943 he married Mary Lyons who died in May of 1948. In June of 1950 he married Connie(Ryan)Hancock. She died in May of 1981. He was a retired farmer,a member of St.Patrick's church, and the Upper Iowa Saddle Club.

He was preceded in death by his wives, a grandson, Kevin Byrnes, and five sisters and brothers, Mrs. Joe (Mary) Fahey, Bill, Leo, Clem and Cecelia Howes.

Surviving are eight children and step-children; Shirley (Hancock) Hermsen of LaPorte, Indiana, Bill Hancock of Aurora, Colorado, Betty (Hancock) Ryan of Shellsburg,Iowa, Mrs. Charlie (Ann) Byrnes, and Jim Howes, both of Waukon, Iowa, John Hancock of Shellsburg, Iowa, Mrs. Gary (Jean) Gilbertson of Waterville, Iowa and Mary Howes of Iowa City, Iowa; 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Urban(Lillian) Magner.
