Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)William Francis Sweeney died Sunday, January 1, 1989 at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa at the age of 84. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 4 at St.Patrick's Church Dubuque, Iowa at 10 a.m. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Behr Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
William was born September 12, 1904 in Waukon, Iowa to Antone and Elizabeth (McCroyden) Sweeney. In September 1936 he married June M. Wittstock. She died July 30, 1977. He was an active member of St.Patrick's Parish where he was an usher for many years and a member of Holy Name Society. He was a longtime member of Knights of Columbus and a member and past president of Barbers Union AFL. He owned and operated his own barber shop for many years before he retired. He was a resident of Ennoble Manor in Dubuque at the time of his death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Don (Ann) Streif of Farley, Iowa and Mrs. Jerry (Ellen) Hindermann of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two sons, William C. Sweeney and John F. Sweeney, both of Dubuque, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Kathryn Needham of Waukon, Iowa.
