Death of D.W.Adams

The family and friends, many of the latter being life-long acquaintances, are bowed in the deepest sorrow as they gather today at the bier of a beloved relative, a dear neighbor and a cherished friend-for such was Mrs. D.W. Adams in her association with the residents of Waukon and vicinity during an expanse of years that broadened to more than half a century. Many of her acquaintances had barely learned of her prostration for the past several months and even her kinsfolk had not been fully apprised of the critical nature of her illness, which at her urgent request was kept from them to save weeks of grief and sorrow. She herself knew that the death shadows ere falling o'er her and with the greatest fortitude and reconciliation awaited the end. The days of her last illness were marked with pain and suffering, but not a murmur of complaint or protest was hears. Her one desire was that those dear to her should be spared as much as possible of life's bitter sorrow which marks the passing of a loved one. Thus did this noble woman in the declining years of her life, bravely endure for nearly four months the inevitable approach of death.

Mrs. Adams had enjoyed unusually good health during her later years, but on her return in April last from Florida she was overcome with illness at Chicago, and shortly after submitted to a surgical operation at St.Luke's hospital. It was then ascertained that her recovery was hopeless and when able she was removed to the home of a relative, Mr. Frank D, Campbell, and confiding herself to the care of a skilled physician and adept nurses she awaited the end. This came Saturday evening last, when she peacefully sank into the sleep that knows no awakening. Mrs. J.N. Eddy was at her bedside in the closing days of her illness, and for the second time within a year was called to part at death's portals from a loving sister.

The remains arrived on Monday's early train. This Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock funeral services will be held at the Eddy home, with Rev. Robbins of the M.E. Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Van Nice. Interment takes place at Oakland cemetery.

Deceased maiden name was Hannah H. Huestis, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Huestis. She was born Sept. 17, 1838 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the family home. In 1853 her parents sought a home in what was then the far west, and in the fall of that year the family reached this immediate vicinity, and thus became one of the pioneer families of this section of the county.

On January 31, 1856, her marriage to Dudley W. Adams took place. She proved an able and helpful aid to her husband in life's struggles which resulted in signal honors and success for both of them in later years.

During the early 70's Mr. Adams was Master of the National Grange organization and Mrs. Adams was endowed with the auxillary honors. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Adams engaged in orange culture in Florida, which proved successful and was carried on in an extensive way until Mr. Adams' sudden death there in 1897. Mrs. Adams had maintained a home there ever since and managed her property interests, and in the meantime had traveled extensively. She had toured Europe and the Nile region of Egypt several times and in 1902 and 03 circled the globe. Her letters of travel proved an entertaining feature of the DEMOCRAT during her weeks of absence on these tours and their happy details will long linger in the minds of those who read them.

Self reliant and of brilliant mind and companionable ways, these characteristics made her an admirable tourist and despite her sixty odd years of age she returned from these arduous trips buoyant in spirit and refreshed mentally and physically. She had other tours in view but the hand of death has intervened.

Deceased is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. J.A. Townsend of Waukon, James E. Huestis of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Mrs. J.N. Eddy of Waukon. Three sisters and a brother have preceded her in death. Charles W. Jenkins of this city, is a cousin. It is they who have known her in the closer relation of kinship who have met with that inestimable loss which time only can soothe but never efface.

—We learn from an item in the Waukon Standard that Mrs. D. W. Adams of that city is seriously ill in Chicago. It says:—“Last spring upon her return from the south, she underwent an operation for the removal of a tumor and has never recovered from it, being under the care of a trained nurse during the entire period. Last week relatives in this city were informed that dropsical symptoms had appeared and that her condition was very serious." P. S.—We regret to hear that death ensued, and her remains were brought home to Waukon for burial on Monday.
