Contributor: Connie Ellis (Hawkins descendant researcher)Stuart Maxwell Hawkins, 75, a 25 year resident of Tumwater, Washington, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Monday, July 18, 1988 in St. Peter Hospital, Tumwater, Washington. He was born June 29, 1913 in West Union, Iowa to Wallace and Grace (Knox) Hawkins. He was the grandson of Hiram Parker Hawkins, a Civil War Veteran of Allamakee County, Iowa. He attended schools in Waukon, Iowa and was graduated from Waukon High School in 1932. He attended Centralia Community College.
Besides being a resident of Tumwater, Mr. Hawkins formerly resided in Seattle,WA and Grand Island, Nebraska. On November 15, 1937 he was married to Roberta Mabry in Elma, Iowa. From 1940 - 1941, Mr. Hawkins was employed by radio station WMAM in Marinette, Wisconsin as a comedian, where he was known as "Cousin Elmer". He was a comedian with the Hugo Players in Grand Island, Nebraska from 1937 until 1945. After coming to the Northwest he was a printer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer from 1949 to 1954, then for the Daily Olympian, 1954 - 1975.
Mr. Hawkins was a published poet, wrote music and was involved with volunteer services. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. With his wife, he started the Olympia Handicapped Center, now known as Morningside, and established Live For Today, a support group for people living with life-threatening illnesses.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Dr. Gregory Hawkins, Spokane, WA and the Rev. Barry Hawkins and wife, Lorraine, Newburgh, NY; a daughter, Valerie Edwards, Portland, Oregon; seven grandchildren;two sisters, Catherine Aschom, Lansing,IA and Helen Sheriff-Baunsguard, San Diego,CA;two brothers, Theodore and Robert Hawkins.
The funeral for Mr. Hawkins was on Friday, July 22, 1988 in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Tumwater. The Rev. David Steen officiated. Burial followed in the Odd Fellows Mausoleum. Mills and Mills Funeral Directors handled the funeral arrangements.
