Clara A. Bakke was born May 15, 1904 in Waterville to Christian and Amelia (Larson) Knudtson. She attended Drake rural school and Waukon High School. On February 27, 1930 she married Ottenus Bakke at the Ingvold Bakke farm in Center Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. They farmed near Elon most of their married life. She was a lifetime Allamakee County resident and had lived in Waukon since 1962.

Clara also worked as a dietary aide at Veterans Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church where she was a member of the choir and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Good Samaritan Club.

Clara died Monday, July 29, 1996 at the age of 92 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 1996 at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Madson will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Martin Funeral Home where friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Casket bearers will be her ten grandchildren, Rod, Steven, Timothy, and Todd Hangartner, Beth, Bill and Nicky Winke, Dave and Mary Jo Martin and Sarah Jones.

Surviving are three daughters, Arlene and husband Roger Martin of Waukon, Joyce Hangartner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Shirley and husband Jim Winke of Waukon; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died March 12, 1969; a son-in-law, Ron Hangartner; brothers, Waldie, Herbert, Clarence and Melvin Knudtson, and sisters, LaVina Fossum, Martha Woerm, Inga Hermanson, and Mabel Fossum.
