Edna Beatrice Dummermuth
Edna Dummermuth, 84, of rural Castalia, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 18, at the Ossian Senior Hospice.
Edna Beatrice Dummermuth was born March 16, 1907, the daughter of Stena (Anderson) and Henry H. Johnson in Fayette County, IA. She moved to Ossian with her parents in 1910.
She was baptized and later confirmed and became a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church in 1920. In 1925 she was graduated from the Ossian Public High School. She entered the School of Nursing at the Lutheran Hospital at LaCrosse, WI, graduating in 1928.
During World War II Edna served with the U. S. Army from 1944-45 as a private duty nurse and later a general duty nurse.
On March 31, 1931, she married Walter Dummermuth in Minneapolis, MN.
She became the administrator of the Postville Community Hospital in 1945 and continued in this position until 1980. The new Postville Community Hospital was built in 1961 during her administration.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia; a member of the Iowa Nurses' Association; the Business and Professional Women's Club at Postville; the Oak Hill Club of Castalia; the Bloomfield Historical Society; the KEWs of Castalia; the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and a member of Ruth Circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, on April 8, 1982; one brother, Harry Johnson; and a sister, Gladys Helen Edna in infancy.
She is survived by one brother, Palmer Johnson of Ossian; two sisters, Henrietta Graham of Ida Grove and Esther Johnson; and seven nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 21, 1992, at 11 am. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. H. W. Wolfgram and Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiated. The Ossian Funeral Chapel was in charge of the services. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Ossian, IA.
Casket bearers were Loren Koenig, Mickey Koenig, Mike Koenig, Robert Szabo, Phil Wander and Vernon Kamp. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Foster, Jerry Guyer, Leo Lehman, Dr. M. F. Kiesau, Dr. Henry Wolf, Alfred Leyh, Aldo Larson, Frank Brannon and the Professional Nursing Staff at the Postville Hospital.
