Walter A. Beneke, 88, of Caledonia, Minn., and formerly of Eitzen, Minn., died suddenly at his home on Saturday, Dec.4, 2010, of a heart attack.

He was born Nov. 2, 1922, in rural New Albin, Iowa, to William and Mary (Meyer) Beneke. On April 18, 1944, he married Margaret Thiele and she preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1993.

Walter was a lifelong area resident. He farmed outside of Eitzen until 1989 when he and his wife moved to Caledonia. Walter was actively involved in various local organizations and was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen.

Survivors include his three children, Gary (Karen), Freeport, Ill.; Garnet (Carla), Onalaska, Wis. and Ann Marie (Rick) Lubinski,Winona, Minn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special and dear friend, Vivian Beneke.

In addition to his wife, Walter was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; four brothers; and seven sisters. Walter was the last surviving sibling of twelve.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D., will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
