Shirley Ball, 50,passed away at her Portland, OR home on Sat., Sept. 2, 2000.
Friends and relatives may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 16 at the Burke Thornburg Funeral Home in Lansing. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m.. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Monona.
Shirley was born Sept. 27, 1949 in Waukon, the daughter of Marvin C. Ball, Waterville, and the late Lillian Christina (Mitchell) Ball. She graduated from St. George High School in Lansing and completed Kirkwood Community College as a registered nurse. She worked in Cedar Rapids hospitals before moving to Portland in 1986, where she gained employment at Providence Hospital.
Shirley cared deeply for nature and animals. She had a passion for history and loved to travel. One of her most memorable adventures was a trip to China with her son Michael, to witness first-hand some of the great historical treasures. Her love of animals was expressed through the care of her two little dogs, Nigel and Alexander, as well as through the donation of her time to animal related causes.
Shirley is preceded in death by her mother, Lillian Ball; and a sister Diane Helena Ball.
Survivors include her son Michael (Joy) Ball, Beaverton, OR; her father, Marvin C. Ball; three sisters, Donna (Donald deceased) Kinley, Marquette, Mary Platten, Cedar Rapids, and Julie (LaVern) Timmerman, Lansing; a brother, Marvin D. Ball, Wasilla, AK; and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made by a donation to the American Diabetes Association. Donations to a local Humane Society are also welcome.Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home assisted the family.
