Hazel Catherine Hennessy, 73, of Lansing, died suddenly Wednesday, March 29, 1995 at Lutheran Hospital.
Hazel was born Nov. 4, 1921 in New Albin, to Cory and Margaret (Gallagher) Moore. She married John Hennessy June 27, 1944 in New Albin. They shared almost 51 years of married life, having celebrated their golden anniversary June 25, 1994.
Hazel is survived by her husband, John, two daughters and three sons, Sheila (Richard) Wieser of LaCrescent, MN, David (Joan Burda) of Ankeny, Terry (Joan Fanta) of Lansing, Sandy (Greg) Edwards of Copell, TX, and Kevin (Joy Wiedenbeck) of LaCrosse.
She is also survived by 23 grandchildren,; three brothers, Ray (Carol) Moore of Lansing, Jim (Virginia) Moore of New Albin and Leo (Thelma Ann) Moore of Snohomish, WA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Hazel attended Winona State Teacher's College and Cedar Falls Teacher's College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools at Harmony, MN, Irish Hollow, Sand Cove, and New Albin Schools. In 1961, she resumed teaching, first at Dry Ridge, then I.C. grade school and then Eastern Allamakee grade school, teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. During her years of teaching and raising a family, she returned to college and graduated from Winona State College with highest honors in 1976.
Although Hazel retired in 1986 after 30 years of teaching, she continued to use life as her classroom and inspired all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by her family and community.
Hazel was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing. She also was a member of the Heritage Club and the Retired Teachers Association.
Hazel spent many days and hours volunteering and doing things for others, thus she loved the poem, "Abou Ben Adhem", part of which describes Hazel's life: "Replied the angel Abou spoke more low, But cheerily still and said, ' I pray thee then. Write me as one that loves his fellow men"
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing, with Fr. Herbert Tegeler officiating. Burial was in in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Leo Keenan, Jim Keenan, Ralph Hennessy, Jim Hennessy, Leo Moore and Bill Moore. Honorary pallbearers were Dodie Bartels, Genevieve Wild, Sylvia Hegy, Carolyn Sampson, Chris Emerson, Jean Wilde, Lee Bjerke, Viette Englehorn, Dottie Kruse and Rose Zoll.
Burke Thornburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
