DEATH SUMMONS NICHOLAS WAGNER
The passing of this good man took place at 1:30 A.M. Saturday, July 18 after a period of several months illness, pronounced by doctors as blood poisoning from a diseased valve in his heart. He was in bed the last ten weeks, and in a coma several days before death ended his sufferings, though every medical skill and a devoted family could do was done for him.
Nicholas Wagner was born Oct. 27, 1861 in Luxemberg, Germany, his age at death being 69 years, 8 months and 21 days. When ten years old he came with his parents to America and settled in French Creek township. He was married Jan. 11, 1887 to Mary Strub, being the first couple married by Father Haxmeier in the new I.C. Church on Main street. They lived for awhile in Lansing township, soon going to Lafayette, where Mr. Wagner by industry and frugality acquired large land holdings. Ten years ago they turned the farm management over to their sons and came to Lansing to reside. Ten children blessed this union, one dying infancy, and a daughter (Rose) Mrs. Mart Cota preceding the father in death. Surviving with the bereaved wife, are three sons, Joseph, Frank and Henry, all of Lafayette, and five daughters, Mrs. Thomas Manning, and Mrs. Leo Tully, Dubuque; Mrs. L.A. Miller and Mrs. Clyde Allyn, Rockford, Ill and Miss Angeline, at home; all being present before his passing and for the funeral. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Wagner, Lansing, one brother, Henry of Minneapolis; and a large circle of relatives and friends.
If ever the old saying, "a good man is down" can be truthfully written in an obituary, it is in the case of Nick Wagner. He was a true type of Christian gentleman, a fond and devoted husband and father, a most obliging neighbor, a true and loyal friend. We have never heard him speak ill of anyone, and we would doubt if he had an enemy, while all who knew him were his friends. To his bereaved family he leaves that good name, which is better than great riches, and his memory will be ever cherished.
The largely attended funeral at I.C. church at 9:30 A.M. Monday testified to the esteem in which this good citizen was held. Msgr. Haxmeier sang the Requiem Mass, the choir rendered the usual appropriate music, and interment was in Gethsemane cemetery. Near neighbors and friends as follows were his pall bearers; W.H. Guider, J.W. Ryan, Will Spinner, Mike Kilgariff, Ed Duncan, R.A. Dunlevy.
May his soul rest in peace.______________
