Waukon Democrat of May 6, l885.
Martin Devitt one of the oldest residents of our county was laid to rest in the Lycurgus cemetery yesterday. About ten days ago he was kicked on the side of the head and the breast by one of his horses , and the injuries received resulted in his death last Sunday morning. Mr. Devitt was born in County Clare, Ireland in November 1826. He came to Ameica in l850, settling first in Pennsylvania. He came to Allamakee County in the fall of l856, and located in French Creek Township , where he operated a farm. In 1868 (1866) he married Miss Mary Drew, who still survives him. Eight children, the eldest of whom is 17 years, were the fruits of their wedded life. Mr. Devitt leaves three brothers living, James residing in this county, one in Kansas and one in Arkansas. Mr. Devitt was one of our most prosperous farmers and leaves his family in prosperous circumstances. He was a man who was always honest and upright in his dealings with his fellowmen, and was held in high regard by all who knew him. The grief stricken wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their hours of sadness. And may the kind Father above solace them in their bereavement.
