Laura D. Wunnecka, 98, a resident of the Caledonia Lutheran Home and formerly of New Albin, died Saturday evening, Dec. 1, 2001, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born Jan. 11, 1903, in Iowa township, Allamakee County, to Frederich and Catharine (Kruckenberg) Meyer. Laura was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns United Church of Christ, Wheatland. On Dec. 4, 1928, she married Albert Wunnecka at St. Peters parsonage in New Albin. They lived and farmed in Crooked Creek township until July 17, 1947, when Albert preceded Laura in death. Laura continued to live and work on the farm until 1961. She then worked as a live-in home care provider for many individuals in the surrounding area. After her retirement, Laura moved to New Albin where she lived for many years before moving to Caledonia. Laura was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Crooked Creek, where she was active with the ladies aid and other church activities. She also served on the District 46 School Board in Crooked Creek. Laura enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and spending time on the farm. Survivors include a daughter, Marvis Hanson of New Albin; a son, Eldor (Vicky) of Freeburg; 8 grandchildren, Gerry (Tony) Klug of Caledonia, Diana Hanson of La Crosse, Connie Hanson of Ridgeway, Iowa, Mary Lou (Russell) Gerard of Spring Grove, Minn., Alan (Cheryl) Wunnecka of Freeburg, Tammy (Andy) Moen of Freeburg, Dawn Mack of Caledonia, and Darin (Fiancee, Heather Bauer) Wunnecka of Freeburg; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan and Emily Klug, Jordon Gerard, Kaitlyn Wunnecka, Miranda and Mackenzie Moen, and Kendra Mack; many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband, Laura was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; three brothers; and a son-in-law, Robert Hanson. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. from Peace United Church of Christ, Crooked Creek. Rev. William J. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.
