Longtime Allamakee county resident, Joseph Kernan, 99, died Tuesday, March 19, 1985, in Northgate Care Center in Waukon, where he had been a resident the past few years.
He was born in Harpers Ferry August 8, 1885, the son of Patrick and Bridget (Mooney) Kernan. He attended rural elementary schools, high school in Lansing and Loras College in Dubuque for two years. He also attended Wisconsin Business College in LaCrosse. He was a retired farmer and a member of Wexford I.C. parish.
He married the former Ellen Cota on June 15, 1909 at St. Ann's Church in Harpers Ferry.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. James (Marcella) McGuire of Wheatland, Wyo., Sister Mary Cyrilla of Algona, Mrs. William (Marguerite) Schulte of Waukon, Mrs. Hugh (Alice) Conway of Harpers Ferry and Mrs. Thomas (Genevieve) Mohn of Lansing; three sons, Francis and Gerald of Lansing and Leo of Wheatland, Wyo.; 43 grandchildren; 90 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and the following brothers and sisters, Mike, Tom, James, Steve, Patrick, Simon, Kate and Mary.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford. Rev. Joseph Heineman conducted the services, with burial in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Cyril Mohn, Rich Schulte, Bob Kernan, Bill Kernan, Ray Conway and Joe McGuire.
The Hanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
