Esther Hertha Hanson
Esther H. Hanson, 90, of Waukon died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah. Funeral services were held Monday, August 2 at Salem United Church of Christ, rural Waukon, with Rev. Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was at Salem Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Esther Hertha Hanson was born November 26, 1919 in rural Postville to John and Hertha (Herman) Grotegut. She attended the Frankville School.
She married Julian “Jack” Hanson January 20, 1942 in the Salem church parsonage. In 1943 they moved to the family farm, which Esther made her home for the rest of her life.
Esther enjoyed all aspects of dairy, beef and grain farming with her husband; she always had free range chickens and sold the eggs in Decorah. During retirement she kept track of farm activities, especially the crops and the calves. Throughout her life she spent her spare time baking bread and reading.
Survivors include two children, Donald (Janet) Hanson of Postville and Darlene (Mark) Bradley of Union; four grandchildren, Tim (Meridith) and Mike Thomas, Kim (Aron) Wanken, and Joel Hanson; two step-grandchildren, Randy (Lynette) Larson and Christy (Barry) Twait; four great-grandchildren, Kaytee and Ed Wanken, and Kaylee and Lucas Thomas; five step-great-grandchildren, Abby, Ally and Sidney Larson, and Jackson and Jenna Twait; and a sister-in-law, Ruth (Vince) Haas of Waukon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Julian; and a sister, Marie Hoffman.
Honorary casket bearers were Emmett and Marjorie Kruger, Tom and Karen Regan, Allan “Greg” and Lisa Snitker, and Dave, Penny and Jeanne Wheeler. Casket bearers were Tim and Mike Thomas, Joel Hanson, Aron Wanken, Randy Larson and Barry Twait.
