Bernice Fritz Clark was born July 8, 1909, the daughter of John and Helen (Luebke) Fritz. She was born at the farm home in French Creek Township, Allamakee County. She was baptized at Zion Reformed Church in Waukon August 15, 1909 by Pastor G. D. Ellicker. She attended the Lycurgus Country School through the eighth grade.
Bernice married Horace Clark November 19, 1930 at the Congregational Church at Churchtown. To this union three children were born, Curtis, Lois and Dianne. They farmed the Clark farm in Makee Township until 1965 when they moved to Waukon.
Bernice was a hardworking farm wife. She liked to dance, play cards and knit. Nearly 100 afghans were made and given to family and friends around the world. Because of declining eye sight, she had to give up knitting and card playing. She danced with the assistance of partners at her 100th birthday party. She was an avid bread, roll, pie and cake baker for many years in Waukon. She baked and decorated baptismal, confirmation, graduation, birthday, wedding and anniversary cakes into her 90s.
She was also a 4-H leader for almost 30 years, something she always enjoyed. She was co-leader of a very successful club, the Lycurgus Lassies.
Bernice was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon and a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Organization. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She participated in Senior Citizen activities until her move to Marion.
Survivors include her daughters, Lois McCormick of Marion and Dianne (George) Prieditis of Chanhassen, MN; her daughter-in-law, Marilyn (Robert) Bulman of Waukon; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews and their families; and one first cousin.
