Dorothy Bauman Opfer was born June 3, 1919 in Waukon, the daughter of Fremont William and Clara Agnes (Lenz) Bauman. She grew up in the Churchtown area of rural Lansing, attending the Churchtown Elementary School and graduating from Lansing High School in 1936. September 18, 1937 she married David Benjamin Opfer in Decorah. Together they traveled the country extensively as Dave worked in the wholesale sales business, until settling in La Crosse, WI in 1957. They continued in wholesale sales by operating the BiChrome Company in La Crosse. Dorothy was involved in many aspects of its operation for several years.
Dorothy’s life was centered on her family and maintaining a comfortable home for them. She spent time doing crochet work and knitting, liked to bake (especially cookies), and was an avid reader. She was also very fond of animals. Dorothy shared a love of travel with Dave and she was always ready to pack up and go, whether it was a cross-country trip or just a drive in the countryside.
Survivors include her two children, Shirley (Ernest “Pete”) Eggett of La Crosse, WI and Roy (Terry) Opfer of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren, Eric Eggett, Audra (Jim) Wieser, Amy Stimac, and Gregory and Douglas (Monica) Opfer; nine great-grandchildren, Kaleff and Riley Knack, Megan, Matthew, and Samuel Wieser, Benjamin, Zachary, and Sara Stimac, and Devin Opfer; and a sister, Bernice (Claude) Schafer of Waukon.
